The Suffolk to South Africa Line

Updated April 2021

This relatively new line has created quite a bit of interest since it was first published in 2019,

with new information being received from a number of different sources. However, there does

appear to be a conflict with some of the details received from various members of the family

currently living in South Africa. Therefore, rather than making changes to the original version

of the file, an appendix has been added at the end of the file, which includes all the details

provided by Patricia Kruger, whose mother’s younger sister married William Albert Collett

	This family line starts in 1360 in Part 18 – The Suffolk Line and continues from there into Part 30 – The Suffolk & Norfolk Line. The latter includes William Collett, the son of William Collett by his second wife Hannah Blogg. Upon his death, in South Africa in 1925, his death record referred to him as William Collett from Saxmundham. He was therefore the second of four generations of men named William, and was followed by his eldest surviving son – who was born in England before the family emigrated to South Africa, where he was ‘renamed’ William Henry Collett. The next one was the eldest son of William Henry Collett, William Hendry Ellis Collett who never married or had any children to be able to continue the family tradition.
	This is the family line of Andrew Trevor Collett (Ref. 74S7) and his son Sean Andrew Collett (Ref. 74T12), both of whom have been instrumental in supplying the vital information to enable the story of their family in South Africa to be told, and where they both live today. However, Sean would like to acknowledge that a large part of the work was due to his grandfather, Trevor Barnes Collett (Ref. 74R10) who, up until his death in 2011, had been attempting to trace his lineage back in time for many years. Sean now believes that he would have been very pleased with what we have accomplished, particularly tracing our family history back to the middle of the 14^th century, and that we have honoured his memory by endeavouring to complete this family line.
	The following is therefore a tribute to his grandfather, in Sean’s own words.
	If I had to describe him in one sentence, it would be that he was a selfless gentlemanly, a prim and proper Englishman, and that he spoke English well, with clear enunciation of words whenever he spoke — you could identify him as being English just by his accent. He used to drop off and collect my sister, and I at school every day in a 1990 Mercedes-Benz 180 E model from when he stayed with us in 2001 for many years, until he could longer do so. He drank a cup of Rooibos tea in china tea cup and saucer every day, served with two teaspoons full of sugar, with no milk added. I distinctly remember his favourite food being succulent lamb chops, along with bread and butter smeared onto the bread. His favourite alcoholic beverage was South African brandy infused in Coca Cola. My grandfather was a passionate trout fisherman and, in my father’s personal recounts of a fishing expedition with his brother Dennis, my grandfather would frequently catch more trout, much to the envy, disappointment and admiration of his sons. He served in the Second World War during 1941/42 in Kenya in the Tank Regiment of the Special Service Battalion of the South African Army, although he contracted malaria, resulting in him being sent home. I remember him recounting to me that he saved an Italian prisoner-of-war’s life by preventing him from drowning when the Italian had attempted to evade custody. My grandfather loved his dogs! He fed them quietly from the table. He enjoyed teasing and had excellent fine sense of humour. He was also was passionate about hunting. Lastly, he was a good sportsman, playing soccer in the army, golf and started to play bowls in his seventies.
74O1	William Henry Edward Collett (Ref. 30O17) was born at Saxmundham on 25^th December 1830. It was there also that he was baptised just two months later on 20^th February 1831, the third child of William Collett (Ref. 30N5 & Ref. 18N38) by his second wife Hannah Blogg, who were married at St Leonard’s Church in Shoreditch on 22^nd November 1824. He was 10 years old at the time of the census in 1841 when he was living with his family in Saxmundham. William was 21 years of age on the occasion of the Saxmundham census in 1851, by which time he was unmarried and was working as a labourer, while living at Park Side Thoroughfare in the family home. For some reason, he was listed as the last child, strangely below all his younger siblings, which very likely indicated that he was only visiting his family, perhaps even discussing with them his forthcoming marriage, near the end of the following year. The marriage of William Collett, aged 21, and Eliza Bobbett, aged 18, was conducted at Saxmundham on 5^th December 1852, as confirmed in the transcription of the parish records produced by the Suffolk Family History Society. Eliza was the illegitimate daughter of an unmarried Sarah Bobbett, who later went on to marry William Gildersleeves. As Eliza Bobbett, she was baptised on 12^th June 1836 at Boyton in Suffolk, near Orford Ness. Her maternal grandparents were Ellis Bobbett and Martha Miller, the name Ellis later given to one of her Collett sons. In addition, her mother’s name of Sarah given to one of her daughters. It is very interesting that, upon the occasion of the death of Arthur Charles Collett, William and Eliza’ eighth child, the record of his death listed his mother’s name as Eliza(beth) Knight Collett. Although not proved, it is possible that the unknown father of base-born Eliza Bobbett, may have been a member of the Knight family of Suffolk, since the Knight name also appeared on the later death records for both William and Eliza.
	What is known for sure, is that the early years of their life together in London, included the births and deaths of William and Eliza’s first three children, as indicated within the details written in the Family Bible by William himself. Fortunately, the couple’s following two children did survive and were both born at Islington in London. By the time the Islington census was conducted in 1861, the family of four was residing at Edward Cottages. William Collett from Saxmundham was a shoemaker at the age of 29, while his wife Eliza Collett from Boyton was 26. Their two children that day were William Collett aged two years and Ellen Collett who was one year old. It was during that same year, when the family emigrated to South Africa, arriving at Port Elizabeth during the earlier weeks of 1862.
	Surprisingly, the passenger list for the ship ‘Coldstream II’, which sailed from England in September 1861, only included the names of William Collett, aged 29 and a shoemaker from Suffolk, his wife Eliza Collett who was 25, and just their daughter, who was described as Sarah Anne Ellen Collett. The ship’s log also confirmed that their intended destination was Mister Shepperson at Grahamstown, midway between Port Elizabeth and Buffalo City. It seems likely that, upon completing his contractual obligations with Mr Shepperson, William went on to open his own business in Alexandria, Eastern Cape Province. There is a mystery around where son William was when the family sailed to South Africa, when it is known that he later raised his own family there. It was also during the sea voyage to South Africa that Eliza gave birth to another daughter, Georgina Collett, who was born about one month into the journey.
	The record of the death of Elizabeth (Eliza) Knight Collett revealed that she was born on 8^th April 1834 and died at the home of her married daughter Rose Nicholas at Bolo Reserve in Stutterheim on 27^th August 1918, at the age of 84. Eliza left a Joint Will (with her husband) which was not proved until 27^th October 1925 at Grahamstown, nearly six months after the death of her husband and nearly three months after his Will had been proved. Her death notice in the Cape Town Archive (Ref. 8590; Source MOOC 6/9/2828) was filed on 25^th November 1925 and revealed the names of the couple’s ten surviving children, with no mention of the three who had suffered infant deaths in London, prior to leaving England for South Africa.
	William Collett died at Stutterheim, Amatole in Eastern Cape, on 13^th March 1925, having been widowed seven years earlier. William and Eliza were both buried in the Bolo district of Stutterheim in Eastern Cape, where William’s headstone says in error, that he died on 12^th April 1925, likewise the headstone indicated his wife had died on 1919 instead of 1918. Curiously, the death notice for William Collett, from Saxmundham, carries the same Cape Town Archive reference number as that of his deceased wife, but with very different information. His death notice, filed on 3^rd November 1925, confirmed his mother’s name as Hannah Collett, nee Blogg, and his late wife as Elizabeth Eliza Knight Collett, to whom he was married at Saxmundham. It also confirms the date of his passing at Bolo, as 13^th March 1925, while his age at death was simply recorded as ‘not sure’. The death notice also gave his occupation as a boiler-smith.
	The ten children of William Collett were recorded on the death notice as: William Henry Collett; Sarah Ann Ellen married to Henry Wade Bowman, both deceased – Sarah having died in June 1911; Georgina married to Edward Wainman Bird; Arthur Charles Collett; Edward James Collett; Walter John Collett; Richard Ellis Collett; Rose Ann Ellen married to Collan Tom Nicholas; Mabel Elizabeth Eliza Collett – spinster; and Muda Jane married to Benjamin Booth Walker. A footnote on the death notice stated that all of the husbands of his daughter were deceased. The notice finished by stating that William did not own any property and that his Will, signed at Bolo, was proved on 8^th July 1925 in the presence of his daughter Rose A E Nicholas, who was with her father when he died.
	The children of William and Eliza did end up in a family split, thought to have been caused by who they took to be their wives and husbands. The family seemed to settle around Alexandria, from where the siblings went their separate ways, some settling ever eastwards towards Natal, some remaining in the general area, and others going north, directly inland. The Eastern Cape settlers hugged the Drakensburg mountain range and finally settled in Natal. One of the brothers, William Henry, married an English girl, with the other four surviving brothers, Arthur, Edward, Walter and Richard, marrying the dreaded Boer women, not very pleasant come the wars between the British and the Boers. All of the girls married Englishmen. Walter John Collett did initially have an English wife, who sadly died giving birth to the couple’s eleventh child, who also did not survive. Following that tragedy, Walter ran away and married a Boer woman, with whom he had two more children.
	Whilst some members of the family may have been involved in the Boer War and First World War, Trevor Barnes Collett served with the South African Forces in Greece during the Second World War, with other members of the following generation involved with the bush wars in Angola, South West Africa and Zimbabwe.

74P1	Annar Collett was born on 4^th February 1852, most likely at Islington in London where the birth of two her younger siblings were recorded and where her family was living in 1861. She was the first-born child of William Collett and Eliza Bobbett, but sadly died only days after she was born, on 20^th February 1852. Her date of birth and the date of her death have been recovered from handwritten notes in the Collett Family Bible held by the family in South Africa. This appears to have been initially written by Annar’s father William Collett on 9^th July 1867.
74P2	William Collett was born on 5^th May 1855, possibly at Islington, the son of William and Eliza Collett, and it was less than two years later that he died on 5^th January 1857. Confirmation of his death was recorded at Islington (Ref. 1b 114) during the first quarter of 1857.
74P3	Anna Collett was apparently born on 19^th June 1857 at Islington and is believed to have died on 19^th January 1858. However, it is very interesting that the death of Anna Collett was recorded at Islington (Ref. 1b 120) during the same quarter as her brother William (above) and only six entries after his death. This raises the obvious question, did William die on 5^th January 1858, with his sister dying fourteen days after, in the same year.
74P4	William Henry Collett, was born at Islington in London on 19^th November 1858, the fourth child of William Collett and Eliza Bobbett. Named simply as William Collett, aged two years, he was living with his family at Edward Cottages in Islington on the day of the census in 1861. Six months later, rather oddly, when his family sailed to South Africa, William did not travel with them, so must have made the journey some time thereafter. It was the Collett Family Bible in which his father recorded the names of his children on 9^th July 1867. In this, William born in 1858, was initially recorded with just the one forename, but at a later time the letter H was inserted.
	It was in 1881 at Bathurst in Eastern Cape Province, just inland from Port Alfred, when William Henry Collett married Sarah Jane Wilmot who had been born on 21^st July 1855, her parents having settled in South Africa in 1820. Her mother was Salina Haywood who married (1) William Bartlett, with whom she had eleven children, before she married (2) William George Wilmot, Sarah Jane being one of their two daughters. It was in Johannesburg that William Henry Collett died on 18^th November 1947, his death notice (Ref. 6406/47), signed on 7^th December 1947, contained the following valuable family information.
	William Henry Collett, of 7 Stockton Road in East London, was 88 years and 11 months old when he died, a widow and a former blacksmith and mason from London, England. His late wife was named as Sarah Jane Collett who died on 26^th December 1940. The five children of William and Sarah were listed as: Rhoda Collett married (Ekron); John Wesley Collett; Myrtle Collett married (Laudee); Blanch Collett married (Classen); and Ruby Collett married (Hoare). The death notice also stated that the estate of William Henry Collet did not exceed £300, that he did not own any property, nor did he leave a Will, the document signed by his son-in-law J W Classen, who was present at the death.
	On Saturday 21^st February 1935 an article, including a photograph of their home, was published in the local newspaper regarding Sarah Jane Wilmot Collett, whose mother was Salina Hayward before she was twice married, and reads as follows: “The good wishes of many friends will be extended to the daughter on an 1820 British Settler, Mrs W H Collett of 24 Moore Street, who celebrates her 80^th birthday. The second daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Geo. Wilmot and widow of William Bartlett, she was born in the Bathurst District in 1855, and had eight children, six of whom still survive, and there are 16 grandchildren. The original homestead of the family, ‘Standerwig’, six miles from the Kowie, still stands unaltered, and is today owned by Mr Grocott, of Grahamstown, who keeps it as a show place – the typical home of an 1820 British settler. Mr and Mrs Collett have always kept an open heart and door for the needy and have a wide circle of friends. While the former is hale and hearty, the latter has been in bad health for some years.” The homestead pictured with the article was ‘Standerwig’ at Bathurst, which was built by Sarah’s mother’s Hayward family, one of the 1820 British Settlers.

74P5	Sarah Anne Ellen Collett was born at Islington in London on 22^nd October 1860, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Collett. She was inaccurately described as Ellen Collett, who was one-year-old in the Islington census of 1861, when she was living with her family at Edward Cottages. Six months after that census day, the family left England for a new life in South Africa. She married Henry Wade Bowman but died in June 1911 and, by the time of the death of her father in 1925, her husband had also passed away. Henry Wade Bowman was born on 12^th January 1859, and their daughter Mary Elizabeth Bowman was born on 15^th September 1888.
74P6	Georgina Collett was born on 13^th October 1861 after her parents had sailed from England during September that year, on board the sailing ship Coldstream II bound for South Africa, arriving in Cape Town early in 1862. She later married William Charles Bird on 11^th May 1884 and it was as Georgina Bird, nee Collett, that she was described in the death notice for her mother, and as Georgina married to Edward Wainman Bird in her father’s death notice in 1925. By that time, she was a widow. The couple’s eldest daughter Georgina Vina Bird never married, while daughter Amuda Bird married Alexander Cumming. This raises the question, was Edward Wainman Bird the brother of William Charles Bird, and was Georgina married twice.
74P7	Walter Charles Collett was born on 26^th November 1863 in South Africa and survived for only three months, when he died there on 26^th February 1864.
74P8	Arthur Charles Collett was born on 23^rd November 1865 at Alexandria in Eastern Cape, another son of William Collett and Eliza Bobbett. It was on 17^th October 1892 at Vicksburg in Orange Free State when Arthur married the very young Martha Aletta Leimecke who was born on 24^th June 1874, their first child born on the first day of February in 1889. In total, Martha gave birth to eight children, while it is possible there was a ninth child, as indicated below. Their father, Arthur Charles Collett was still alive when his father died in 1925. It was at Dealesville in South Africa that he died on 11^th September 1952. Six years later Martha Aletta Collett passed away on 8^th August 1958.
	It was also at Dealesville Cemetery, that Francis Elizabeth Collett was buried following her infant death on 4^th August 1949. She was born on 8^th February 1948 and was the grandchild of Arthur Charles and Martha Aletta Collett, being the youngest child of their eldest son. The Orange Free State death notice for Arthur Charles Collett provided the following information. Firstly, that he died on 11^th September 1951 when he was 85, that he died at Goedehoop, and that he was born at Kaap Kolonie, the son of William Collett and Elizabeth Knight Collett. His wife was confirmed as Martha Aletta Leimecke and their children were listed as Arthur Charles Collett, Oliver Fred Collett, Clifford Collett, Denise Martha Collett McKey, Lilly Emily Collett Nel, Sidney James, Herbert Benjamin Collett and Amuda Anne Collett Marwic. His children-in-law were named as David McKey, Louis Nel and Clem Marwic. There was no mention of a son called Gabriel or Robert.

74P9	Edward James Collett was born on 26^th May 1867 at Alexandria, another son of William and Eliza Collett. He married Annie Letitia Sophia Ventre and was still alive when his father died in 1925. It was eleven years later that he died on 25^th January 1936, following which he was buried at Oliphants Hoek. The first of their children was born in Rhodesia, before settling in Mooiplaats by the time their son was baptised there during the following year.

74P10	Walter John Collett was born on 8^th May 1869 at Alexandria, another son of William and Eliza Collett, who was still alive in 1925, when his father passed away. He was initially married to (1) Selina Georgina Usher who was born at Port Alfred around 1865, the daughter of Henry and Annie Usher. They had eleven children, although it was during the birth of their last child that Selina died at Bashee Bridge on 10^th March 1912 at the age of 46 years and 6 months, the child also not surviving the ordeal. Troubled and upset by the death of his wife, he apparently run away and six months later, at the of 45, Walter John Collett, a widower and a resident of MuJolo, married (2) Hester Johanna Magdalena Henning, a spinster of 36 years from Esenqumain Martsort, on 9^th September 1912 at Ugie, Maclear in Cape Province. Once married, Walter and his new Boer wife, initially settled on the other side of the country, with Hester presenting Walter with a further two children.
	It was the death notice (NASA Cape Town MOOC 6/9/718 Ref. 1804) for Selina Georgina Collett, who was from good English stock, which named the couple’s ten children. Sadly, when their father re-married, he abandoned his ten children. It seems likely that his two eldest daughters were themselves married by then, so it fell on the shoulders of Walter’s unmarried daughter Winifred, to take charge of looking after some of her siblings. It was other members of Walter’s family who took in the children, with the younger ones being looked after by Walter’s older married brother William Henry Collett, a lay-preacher, whose own children had grown-up by then, while the older children were cared for by Winifred Ashington at Melmoth and nearby Eshowe.
	On 8^th February 1930, Walter John Collett and Johanna Magdalena Collett, born Henning, residing in Bethel, Transvaal, made their Will. Two of their children, Magdalena and James, were the two sole heirs of their estate. It was two weeks later that Walter John Collett passed away on 22^nd February, at the age of 60, after which his widow signed the following legal undertaking: “I Johanna Magdalene Collett, born Henning, widow of the late Walter John Collett, hereby undertake to remain liable for all the debts of the estate of the late Walter John Collett of Bethel, up to the value of the assets taken over by me.” The document was sign by J M Collett on 27^th March 1930.
	The death notice for Walter John Collett, sign by his widow on 10^th March 1930, listed all of the children named below, including the last of them by his first wife, Milton Frederick Collett, who may not have survived, since nothing seems to be known about him.

74P11	Richard Ellis Collett was born on 20^th October 1871 at Alexandria, yet a further son of William and Eliza Collett. He was nearly five months old when he was baptised at Alexandria on 17^th March 1872. He later married Johanna Jacoba Els and was still alive in 1925 when his father died at Bolo. Their second child, Edith Letitia, was baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in East London, Cape of Good Hope on 13^th September 1902 when her parents were confirmed as Richard Ellis Collett and Johanna Jacoba Collett.
	The baptism record (Ref. 165) stated that Edith had been born on 2^nd September 1900 and that her parents were residing at Mooiplaats, where their first six children were born, before settling in Fort Jackson, where their last two children were born. Richard Ellis Collett died in 1948 and six years later his wife Johanna Jacoba Collett, nee Els, passed away in 1954. Richard Ellis Collett was the was the father-in-law of Theodor Albert Bode and Gustav Adolf Bode, the great grand uncles of Matthew Bode, who kindly provided the new information regarding the father of Richard Ellis Collett and his marriage to base-born Eliza Bobbett, previously said to be Eliza Knight, who unconfirmed father may have had the surname Knight.

Rose was also with her father in 1925 when he died, and was present when his Will was proved on 8^th July 1925. By that time in her life, Rose was a widow. The two known children of Rose and Collan were, Collan Alexander Collett Nicholas, the grandfather of Lesley Els, and his younger brother Edward George Nicholas. Rose Ann Ellen Nicholas was 67 years of age, when she died in 1943.
74P13	Mabel Elizabeth Eliza Collett was born at Alexandria on 13^th April 1879, but was never married and was described as a spinster on her father’s death notice in 1925.
74P14	Muda Jane Collett was born at Alexandria in Eastern Cape on 16^th September 1880, the last child of William Collett and Eliza Bobbett. Her father had intended her name to be Maud, but wrote it in error as Muda when registering her birth. She later married Benjamin Booth Walker and was still alive when her father died in 1925, although both her mother and her husband had died by then. Their son was Joe Walker.
74Q1	William Hendry Ellis Collett was born at Standerwick in Eastern Cape Province on 6^th November 1881. He was the first child of William Henry Collett and Sarah Jane Wilmot, but tragically was disabled. He never married and it was at East London, near Buffalo City in South Africa where he died on 6^th April 1929.
74Q2	George Wainman Wilmot Collett was born at Standerwick in Eastern Cape, on 25^th June 1884 and he married Maude Egling. It was on 9^th August 1946 that George Wainman Wilmot Collett passed away at the age of 62 years, with his Will passed through the probate service at Grahamstown in Albany. His death notice (Ref. 4074/46) recorded the following information. His father was William Henry Collett of 7 Stockton Street in East London, his birthplace was Bolo and nationality was Union National, and he was 62 years and one month old when he died. The place where he was married was Ingcobo, where he also died. His children were recorded as Elvira Hatfield born Collett, Pearl Wakeford born Collett, Alesia Collett, Hazel Collett, Donald Collett and Ruby Collett. George had no fixed property or a Will and his estate was estimated to be less than £300.

74Q3	Rhoda Selina Ella Collett was born at Standerwick in Eastern Cape on 1^st September 1887 and was baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Bathurst on 23^rd October 1887, the daughter of William Henry Collett and Sarah Jane Collett. Rhoda was still unmarried on 26^th March 1913, when, as R S E Collett, she was a witness to the marriage by special licence of her younger cousin Charlotte Rose Collett (Ref. 74Q25). Rhoda Selina Collett later married Arthur J T Ekron and, in 1982, at the age of 95, Rhoda Ekron was residing in East London, not far from her two younger sisters Blanch Classen and Ruby Hoar (below).

74Q5	Arthur John Wesley Collett was born at Bolo within the Stutterheim district of Eastern Cape on 3^rd January 1892, another son of William Henry Collett and Sarah Jane Wilmot. During 1917, Arthur married Kathleen Ruth Barnes, from Cathcart, who was born on 27^th March 1892. Their marriage produced three children, before Arthur died in Pretoria on 18^th February 1952. Kathleen Ruth Collett passed away on 31^st October 1974. Arthur was a keen fly-fisherman, in particular trout-fishing, a past-time with a long tradition within the family, passed down through the generations from Arthur to his great-grandson Sean Andrew Collett.
	The death notice for Arthur John Wesley Collett, stated that he was also known as John Wesley Collett, and also confirmed the following details. He was born at Port Alfred in Cape Province and was European, the son of William Henry Collett (deceased) and Sarah Jane Collett (deceased) and was 60 years and one and a half months old. His occupation was that of a traveller and his last place of residence was The Royal Hotel in Potchefstroom. His wife was descried as Kathleen Ruth Collett, born Barnes, married out of community property. He died on 18^th February 1952 at the hospital in Pretoria after being involved in a car accident, leaving three adult children, all as listed below. The informant of his death was his younger sister Ruby Hoare (below).

74Q7	Margaret Violet Blanch Collett, who was known as Blanch, was born at Bolo in Eastern Cape on 10^th August 1897 and she married John William Classen who was born on 8^th January 1896. In November 1947, Blanch and her husband were staying with her father at 7 Stockton Road in East London, when he passed away, John William Classen signed his death notice, as present on the day he died. Later in their life, Blanch and John Classen were living at East London and it was there also where she was living in 1982. John William Classen was also the God father of Dorothy Hazel Shirley Collett, her uncle.
74Q8	Flourna Ruby May Collett, who was known as Ruby, was born at Bolo in Eastern Cape on 21^st February 1901 married Seymor Hoare. Later in her life, Ruby Hoare lived at East London, where she was still living in 1982.
74Q10	Arthur Charles Collett was born in South Africa on 1^st February 1896, first-born child of Arthur Charles Collett and Martha Aletta Leimecke. He married (1) Getraide Susanna Senekaal and later (2) Magdalene Cornelia Francina Wolff, known as Lulu who was born on 20^th February 1907. Curiously his second wife’s death notice stated that her husband was Norman Arthur Collett, while it was at Bloemfontein on 3^rd January 1969 that Arthur Charles Collett died. His Orange Free State death notice revealed the following details. His parents were Arthur Charles Collett and Martha Aletta Collett, his wife’s name was Magdalena Cornelia Francina Wolff Collett, with his additional wife having been Susannah Senekaal Collett. His children were recorded as Leslie Collett, Charles Collett, Neville Collett, Myrtle Grobler, Eric Collett, Norman Collett, Sylvia Schoeman, Daphne Booysen, Susan Britz and Edith Cochrane. These children are listed below in the order provided by the death notice not by their date of birth which, in many cases, are not known. The date of birth of Arthur Charles Collett was recorded in the death notice as 1^st February 1896, which ties in neatly with his sister Lilly (below) being born in 1898.
	It is now believed that, the aforementioned Norman Arthur Collett was the fifth child of Arthur Charles Collett who was born in 1928. The children listed below were a mix of the children by Arthur’s first wife (1) and his second wife (2). The last child on the list, Frances Elizabeth Collett, was not mentioned in the death notice of Arthur Charles Collett in 1969 because she did not survive and was buried at Dealesville Cemetery, when the family was living at Dealesville Farm in Orange Free State. All of the children from his first marriage were born at Wynberg, Orange Free State.

Curiously, within the information received from the Collett family in South Africa, he could have been the child of Arthur and Martha’s eldest son Arthur Charles Collett (above) by his second wife. Whoever his parents were, Gabriel Robert Collett married Anna Magdalena Brummer who died in 1935.

Judging by the photograph show here, it would appear that Freddie served with the armed forces at some time during his life, perhaps in the Second World War, by which time he was a married man. Sidney James Collett died at Tweespruit on 10^th July 1980, the husband of Cathleen Johanna Brown Collett and the father of Sheila Collett Pietersen.

74Q16	Denise Martha Collett was born in South Africa on 30^th August 1911, another daughter of Arthur and Martha Collett. She may have been married twice in her life, the first time after the reading of banns to (1) Stephanus Johannus van Schalkwijt on 11^th August 1931 at Wynberg, Orange Free State in South Africa. He was 27 and a boxer who was residing in Philippolis, Denise being 19 and a resident of Wynberg. That first marriage gave Denise two daughters Phyllis and Madge. It was later on when she married (2) David McKey, being referred to with that surname in her father’s death notice of 1951. Denise was 87 years old when she died on 17^th December 1998 in Johannesburg, at the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, Gauteng in South Africa, the cause of death being myocardial infarction.
74Q17	Amuda Anne Collett was born in South Africa on 26^th September 1914, the youngest daughter of Arthur and Martha Collett. The story behind her rather odd first name, is that her father intended naming her as Maude Anne Collett but made a spelling mistake on the certificate. She later married Clementor Marwic, from Yugoslavia, and they had Victoria and Clem Junior. It was at Alberton, Gauteng in South Africa where Amuda Anne Marwic died on 12^th July 2003, the cause of death being bronchial pneumonia.
74Q18	Clifford Kenneth Collett was born at Wynberg in South Africa on 17^th December 1917, the last child of Arthur Charles Collett and Martha Aletta Leimecke. He was married twice during his life, the first time to (1) Kitt Collett and the second time to (2) Johanna Fransina Magdalena, who was known as Joey. Who Kitt Collett was is still to be determined. Clifford Kenneth Collett died at Vanderbijlpark in Transvaal on 23^rd September 1989, when he was confirmed as the son of Arthur Charles and Martha Collett. His Orange Free State death notice listed his was wife as Johanna Fransina Magdalena and an additional wife as Kitt Collett. His six children were named as Clifford Kenneth C, Floris Albert C, Cyril Stephen Campbell C, William Albert Collett, Patricia Ann Niekerk and Arthur Charles Collett.
	Another, unconfirmed source, lists amongst their children the name of Douglas (Dougy) Denham Collett who was married to Edith Mary. However, it would be impossible for him to be the son of Clifford Kenneth Collett because he was born sixteen years before the said Clifford K Collett, having been born on 8^th January 1901, according to the unconfirmed source. Another source claims that Clifford and his wife Joey had two sons and a daughter, which may be a reference to William and Arthur and their sister Patricia. If correct, the other four children resulted from his first marriage to Kitt Collett.

Tragically, Dudley died young and was buried at Lydenburg.
74Q24	Lettie Tisher Collett was born at Mooiplaats on 2^nd May 1903 and was baptised there at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel on 27^th July 1903. She was the sixth child of Edward James Collett and his wife Annie Letitia Sophia Collett, the family living at Mooiplaats on the baptism day. Lettie was 21 when she was married by special licence to William Jacobus Lombaard at Lydenburg, Transvaal, on 1^st September 1924. William was 44 years of age, a bachelor and a farmer. Prior to her wedding day, Lettie, from Komgha, had been performing household duties at Lydenburg. The wedding certificate also stated that the couple were married without an ante-nuptial contract. William Lombaard was the first of her five husbands, with no children at all being born to Lettie by those husbands.
74Q25	Emily Daisy Collett was born at Mooiplaats on 10^th May 1904, the youngest daughter of Edward James Collett and Annie Letitia Sophia Ventre. It was at East London that she was baptised on 1^st August 1904, when the family was still residing in Mooiplaats. She later married Willem Lubbe.
74Q26	Joseph William Collett was born at Komgha on 16^th September 1906 and was baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in East London on 19^th December 1907, a son of Edward J Collett and Annie L Collett. He was later married by special licence to Mary Pattinson at Germiston, Transvaal, on 3^rd February 1930. Joseph was 23, a bachelor and a bricklayer from Cape Province, while Mary was only 16 years of age and a tailoress, whose mother had given her consent for Mary to be married. Within the family, Joseph’s wife was known as Pearl, their third child also given that name, despite being not being female.

74Q28	Alice Annie Collett was born at Mooiplaats on 24^th August 1886 and was three years old when she baptised at the East London Wesleyan Methodist Chapel on 11^th November 1889, the eldest of the ten children of Walter John Collett and Selina Georgina Usher.
74Q30	Winifred Lydia Jane Collett was born at Mooiplaats on 26^th June 1892, the third child of Walter and Selina Collett. It was at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in East London that she was baptised on 27^th September 1893. At the age of just twenty, following the death of her mother in 1912 and on being abandoned by her father that same year, it was Winifred who keep the family home going, where she looked after some of her older siblings. By that time, it seems very likely that her two older sisters were already married. She subsequently married Frederick James Ashington, who was born on 23^rd July 1888, with whom she had eleven children. She was almost 45 years old, when Winifred Lydia Jane Ashington, nee Collett, died on 24^th May 1937. He husband survived for a further thirty-three years, when Frederick James Ashington died on 28^th July 1970, at the age of 92.
74Q31	Charlotte Rose Collett was born at Mooiplaats during 1894, although no birth or baptism record for her has so far been found. There was speculation within the family that she may have married to become Charlotte Rose Doner. However, that might have been through a second marriage, because Charlotte was only 18 and a spinster when she was married by special licence to William Richard Gower, who was 24, a widower and a farmer residing at Caverno Umga within the Maclear District. The wedding took place at Maclear on 26^th March 1913, when one of the witnesses was R S E Collett. She was Charlotte’s older cousin Rhoda Selina Ella Collett (Ref. 74Q3).
74Q32	Violet Amelia Collett was born at Mooiplaats on 12^th July 1896, another daughter of Walter and Selina Collett. Two months later she was baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in East London on 13^th September 1896, when her father was confirmed as Walter John Collett, a road overseer. It is understood that she may have married to become Violet Amelia Henderson.
74Q33	Walter John William Collett was born at Mooiplaats on 5^th April 1898, the first of the three sons of Walter and Selina Collett. Like his older sisters, he too was baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in East London on 7^th May 1898, when his father’s occupation was again that of a road overseer.
74Q34	Clifford Ellis Collett was born at Mooiplaats during 1900, although no date of birth or baptism is currently known. What is known is that the marriage of Clifford Ellis Collett and Winifred Gertrude took place in, or prior to, 1928, as their daughter was baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Church on 22^nd May 1929, when the couple was residing at 77 Tutton Terrace in East London.

She was twenty-eight years old when the marriage of Gladys Selina Collett and Bernard Daniel Swart was recorded at Komgha in Cape Province on 7^th October 1933, following the reading of banns on 13^th September 1933. Bernard was only twenty years of age and was a mason who had been a resident of Komgha for the previous thirteen years. Gladys had only moved to Komgha ten months earlier, where she was employed in house duties.
74Q37	Edwin George Collett was born at Mooiplaats on 11^th September 1907, the tenth and last child of Walter John Collett and his first wife Selina Georgina Usher. Edwin was nearly four years old when his mother died, after which his father was quickly married and, together, the newly-wed couple ran off to the other side of the country, abandoning the child of his first marriage. Edwin’s unmarried older sister, Winifred, tried to keep the family together but, in the end, it was the older siblings who stayed with Winifred, while the youngest members of the family, including Edwin, were taken into the care of other members of the extended Collett family. It was at East London on 23^rd December 1931 that Edwin George Collett was married by special licence to Irene Mathilda Augustina Meyer, who had been born on 4^th December 1910. Edwin was 24 and a tractor operator living at Komgha, where Irene was also living at the age of 21. All of their children were born at Komgha and, on the occasion of the birth of their last child, the family was residing at Creamery Road in Komgha.

Upon the death of her first husband, Magdalena Johanna Landman (nee Collett) from Cape Province was 38 when she married Dirk Jacobus Pretorius, from Cape Province, who was 62, at Aliwal Noord on 12^th July 1951. The marriage certificate stated that they were both residing at Rouxville, ten miles to the north of Aliwal Noord.
74Q40	Albert James Collett was born at Surbiton in South Africa on 23^rd April 1918 and was baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Cathcart in Eastern Cape, on 19^th May 1918, the second and last child of Walter John Collett and his second wife Hester Johanna Magdalena Henning. All that is known about him, is that he married Annie.
74Q41	Gladys Johanna Elizabeth Collett was born in the Mooiplaats district of Komgha during 1899, the first-born child of Richard Ellis Collett and Johanna Jacoba Els. Although no baptism record for her has been found, upon being married she became Gladys Johanna Elizabeth Tetmann.
74Q42	Edith Letitia Collett was born at Mooiplaats on 2^nd September 1900, the second child of Richard and Johanna Collett. She was baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in East London on 13^th September 1902, the same day that her younger brother Richard (below) was also baptised there. All that is known, is that Edith Letitia Collett never married and died during 1989.
74Q43	John Richard Collett was born at Mooiplaats on 4^th August 1902 and was baptised with his older sister Edith (above) on 13^th September 1902 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in East London, the eldest two children of Richard and Johanna Collett. Tragically, it was later that same year that he suffered an infant death during December 1902.
74Q44	Letisha Elizabeth Collett, whose was known as Lettie, was born at Mooiplaats on 9^th November 1903, the third child of Richard Ellis Collett and Johanna Jacoba Collett, who was baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in East London. It was the baptism record of 3^rd February 1904 that confirmed the family was residing at Mooiplaats. At some time in her life, she married Robert Alexander Pletschke, who was born in 1887, who died in 1965. Lettie survived her husband by fourteen years, when she died in 1979. Their marriage produced two daughters and a son, Muriel, Thelma and Robert.
74Q45	Johanna Jacoba Collett was born at Mooiplaats on 24^th February 1906 and was baptised on 7^th April 1906 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in East London, another daughter of Richard E and Johanna J Collett. She later married Theodore Albert Bode who was born in 1899 and who died in 1963. Johanna Bode, nee Collett, passed away in 2003. During their life together Johanna gave birth to two sons, Errol and Trevor. It is interesting that her younger sister Florence, also married a member of the Bode family, when she married Gustav Bode, Theodore’s brother.

All that is known about her is that she married Gustav Bode, the brother of Theodore Bode who married Florence’s older sister Johanna. The marriage of Florence and Gustav produced two children, and they were Ivan Gustav Bode and Sydney Melvin Bode. Florence’s husband was born in 1901 and died in 1970, whereas Florence passed away much later, in 2011.
74R1	Elvira Collett was born at East London around 1922, the eldest child of George Wainman Wilmot Collett and Maude Egling. By the time of the death of her father in 1946, Elvira had already married Fred Hatfield.

74R3	Alesia Thora Collett was born at 9 Hallett Street, West Bank in East London on 28^th December 1926. She was baptised on 20^th February 1927, the daughter of George Wainman Wilmot Collett and Maude Collett. She later married Hendry Erasmus.
74R4	William George Francis Collett was born at 25 Signal Street in East London on 10^th September 1928, the eldest son of George and Maude Collett. He was baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Church on 25^th February 1929.
74R5	Dorothy Hazel Shirley Collett was born at 25 Signal Street in East London on 10^th September 1930, another daughter of George Wainman Wilmot Collett and Maude Egling. She was baptised on 18^th October 1930 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in East London, when her God parents were named as Matilda Barrow and John William Classen. She was known as Hazel and was still a minor when her father died in 1946. Sometime after then, she married Hannes Oosthuizen.

74R8	Vivian Daphne Collett was born during 1917 at Eastern Cape, the eldest of the three children of Arthur John Wesley and Kathleen Ruth Barnes who were married earlier that same year. She married Albert Clarke and died in 1986.
74R9	Cecil Graham Collett was born on 3^rd March 1919 at Eastern Cape, the older of the two sons of Arthur and Kathleen Collett. He married Dorothy May Smith, who gave him a son, and died during January 1997.

74R10	Trevor Barnes Collett was born at Engo in Bloemfontein on 2^nd August 1921. He served with the Tank Regiment of the Special Service Battalion of the South African Army during the Second World War, but contracted malaria at some time during the campaign at Eretria in Greece, resulting in a premature return home to South Africa. After the war he married Georgina Daphne Dagg who was born on 22^nd June 1923, the daughter of George Dagg (who had run away from home in Ireland) and Hilda Mattig (of German descent). Trevor was nearly ninety years old when he died at Dundee in South Africa on 15^th April 2011, after which his ashes were scattered at the ‘look-out’ at Olifants Kruger National Park, near Pretoria.
	George Cecil Caldwell Dagg was born at Delvin, County Mayo in Ireland on 5^th March 1884. He joined 1^st Battalion Irish Guards and was 17 years old at the time of joining although, according to his military attestation form completed on 8^th August 1901, he claimed he was 18 years and 5 months old. He was a detective with Criminal Investigation Department of the police force in Johannesburg from 1915. It was also in Johannesburg that he married Hilda Christine Mattig on 11^th September 1911.

74R11	Leslie George Collett was born on 11^th October 1919, the eldest child of Arthur Charles Collett and his first wife Getraide Susanna Senekaal. By 1943 he was married to Anna Catharina Lategars, the daughter of Hendrik William Lategars who died on 29^th July 1943 at the age of 62. It was on his death notice that Anna Catharina Collett was named as his eighth child and the husband of Leslie Collett. It is interesting that later in his life that the wife of Leslie George Collett was Elizabeth Cecilia Aletta Collett who may have been his second wife.
74R12	Charles Robert Collett, whose date of birth is not known, but may have been around 1932, was a child of Arthur and Getraide Collett, the first of his two wives. It is understood that Charles later married Malinda, with whom he had a daughter Joie Collett.

He was 26 years old when he married Johanna Cornelia Hall, aged 28, at Alberton, Transvaal, on 4^th September 1948. Eric was residing at Nancefield Poskantoor Kliptown, where his sister Myrtle (above) was living when she was married three years earlier. On her wedding day, Johanna was residing at Tweedelaan 53a, Alberton, her date of birth being 14^th May 1920.

Another record claims that Norman also married Magriet, his second wife, by whom he had three children, although, tragically their daughter committed suicide. The name of Norman Arthur Collett (or maybe Arthur Norman Collett his son) is also linked to Johannes Petrus, who was born on 3^rd May 1952.

74R22	Phyllis Thelma Collett was born at Wynberg in Orange Free State on 16^th November 1932, the eldest of the two daughters of Oliver Frederick Collett and Catarina Wilhelmina Levina Roodt. Phyllis later married Frank Marchant Butler with who she had three children and it was the eldest one, Robyne Little, who kind provided the details regarding her grandparents, parents and siblings. Frank was born on 4^th July 1932 and died on 31^st June 2015. The couple’s three children are, Robyne Carol Butler born on 16^th October 1959, Gail Jennifer Butler born on 16^th November 1961 and Bruce Stuart Butler who was born on 2^nd February 1963.
74R23	Joan Helen Collett was born in Johannesburg on 27^th February 1938, the second daughter of Oliver and Catarina Collett. Joan married Robin Carmichael and they adopted a daughter and a son.
74R24	Sheila Collett was the only known child of Sidney James Collett and his wife Cathleen Johanna Brown. Sheila was born on 10^th July 1936 and was very nearly nineteen when she married Hendrik Petrus ‘Hennie’ Pietersen on 6^th July 1957. As far as is known, they had no children, with the death of Sheila Pietersen taking place at Reitz, Free State on 31^st May 2015, after which she was buried at Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa.

74R43	Inez Selina Johanna Collett was born around 1935 at Komgha, the second child of Edwin and Irene Collett, for whom no birth or baptism record has been found. However, it was at Komgha on 26^th June 1954 that Inez Selina Johanna Collett, aged 19, was married by special licence to Graham Alexandra David Fitchat who was a bachelor and a farmer at 27. Graham was from Grahamstown and Inez from Komgha had no occupation, but did have her parent’s permission to be married.
74R44	Eldred Baden Collett was born at Komgha on 29^th January 1938, another son of Edwin and Irene Collett. He was around twenty-one years old when he married Helen Bezuidenhout with whom he had four children. Eldred Baden Collett died during 1997, prior to his sixtieth birthday.

Where they fit into this family has still to be determined.

In 2019 Andrew was residing in Dundee, Kwa-Zulu-Natal in South Africa, where he is the current holder of the Collett Family Bible. Dundee has relatively high altitude and lies right in the middle of the battle fields of the Boer Wars, and therefore has a particular significance in the history of South Africa. It is also Andrew, together with son Sean, who kindly provided the vast majority of his family’s details which has enabled this new family line to be displayed on the Collett website. He married Erika Smit who presented him with a son and a daughter, Erika having been born on 21^st June 1964. Prior to that, Andrew had an earlier son, the mother being J Spurrier. Sometime during the latter part of the Angola Bush War [1977-1981] Andrew served with the foot patrol border security regiment.

	Albert Henry Collett was born on 23^rd March 1896 and he died on 8^th April 1982. He married Sarah Jane Walker by special licence on 31^st December 1921, and she was born on 10^th May 1898 and died on 1^st March 1969. Their graves can be found in the Mafeking Cemetery, North West South Africa, also known as Mafikeng Cemetery. The couple’s marriage certificate confirmed that Albert was 25 and a foreman, while Sarah was 23, with no occupation, who was residing at Aberfeldy in Harrismith, Orange Free State. One of the witnesses was A G Collett.

74R29	William Albert Collett, who was Patricia Kruger’s uncle Willie, was born on 22^nd June 1922 at Mafeking and was 65 years old when he died at Mafeking on 16^th November 1987 from a heart attack. In between times, William Albert Collett married Martha Susan Elizabeth Tellis, the younger sister the mother of Patricia Kruger, who reports that her ‘Aunt Marfie’ was still alive in 2019, at the age of 95. During the Second World War, William was captured and made a prisoner-of-war and, upon his release, he returned to Mafeking, where he raised his family. At some stage in his life, he left Mafeking to work in the mines at Welkom in Orange Free State, but again returned to Mafeking where he lived out the rest of his life. After he passed away there, his widow continued to live there until after the death of her son David in 2014, when Martha moved to live with her surviving twin daughter Winnifred at Sasolburg.
	In the notes sent in by Patricia Kruger, she refers to many more siblings of William Albert Collett and his twinned-sister Winnifred listed here. She claims, but provides no evidence, that their other siblings were: Kathleen; Edith; Delores; Adelaine - who suffered an infant death; Charlie; Neville; Desmond; Henry; Bokkie (a nickname) who was married to Audrey; and Michael who was said to be still alive in 2019, when Michael John (below) had died in 1993.

Their three children were Stephan Edward van der Vyfer, born on 21^st October 1971, was never married, and died on 26^th October 2016, Jennifer Joan van der Vyfer, born on 24^th May 1974, also never married, and died on 12^th December 2015, and finally Rocco van der Vyfer who was born on 12^th April 1975, who married Jeanene Roets.
74S23	Winnifred Margaret Collett was born on 21^st March 1953 and was the twin sister of Jennifer (above). She was nineteen when she married Richard Leonardo Gilchrist on 10^th August 1972, Richard having been born on 14^th January 1952. The couple had two sons, before they were divorced during 1987. Their first-born child was Richard Alexander Gilchrist who was born on 31^st October 1975 who, after the turn of the century, had three children of his own, while their younger son was Clinton William Gilchrist who was born on 22^nd November 1980.
74S24	Pauline Joan Collett was born on 14^th December 1955 and she died from cancer at Mafeking on 23^rd January 2013 at the age of 57. She married Brian Henry Grobler, with whom she had a son, Basil Brian Grobler who was born on 21^st May 1985. His father was born on 11^th November 1950, and he died on 10^th November 2003, the before he would have celebrated his 53^rd birthday.

74T2	Colleen Collett was born on 5^th February 1972 and she married Nantus Kritzinger Oosthuizen who was born on 16^th January 1963. Their two children are Juan Kritzinger Oosthuizen, who was born on 19^th January 1993, and Zandré D´Millander Oosthuizen who was born on 30^th October 1996. Subsequently, Colleen and Nantus have been divorced.
74T3	Simoné Collett was born on 7^th July 1977 and she later married J P Steenkamp, born 13^th November 1974. They have three children, Johannes Pieter Steenkamp, born on 31^st January 2000, Wessel Müller Steenkamp, born on 15^th September 2002, and Uné Steenkamp who was born on 20^th December 2008.
	In correspondence between Patricia Kruger and Sean Collett, the name of James Johnson Collett was mentioned, as someone contacted to the South African Collett families. He was born in England and died at Boksburg in Transvaal on 3^rd December 1941 at the age of 84 years and 8 months. The death certificate stated that he had been born at Thring in Hants, which probably was meant to be Tring in Herts (Hertfordshire). However, no such record has so far been found for his birth, baptism, nor with regard to his parents. The death certificate did contain the following information. His occupation was that of a doorkeeper and his place of residence was 19 Union Street in Boksburg. His widow was Edith Mary Collett, nee Brindley, married in the community and of property. Place married was Cape Town.
	The children of James Johnson Collett and Edith Mary Brindley were listed as: James Collett; Charles William; Arthur George Collett; Albert Henry Collett; Ernest Collett; Leonard Collett; Ethel Mary Collett; and Ada Grace Collett. And finally, it was recorded that the deceased had left a Will.
	APPENDIX TWO
	One of many unanswered questions relates to Linda Meryl Collett, who was crowned Miss South Africa in 1969 and attended the Miss World beauty competition in London that same year. Where she might fit into this family line has still to be determined. During a recent conversation with Elaine Davey, the grand-daughter of Winifred Lydia Jane Collett (Ref. 74Q29), the discussion she had with her parents and or her grandmother around that time in 1969 was that “Miss South Africa, Linda Collett, is one of us”. All we do know is that Linda was the daughter of William Collett and Doris Collett, attended a girls’ school in Durban and, upon being married to Dennis Fletcher, became Linda Fletcher. They have a son Timothy Fletcher.
